ASA EducationTo accommodate an increasingly knowledgeable and discerning clientele, appraisers need to develop a working mastery of basic and discipline-specific valuation theories and related field practices. ASA's courses prepare you to become and remain competitive and in demand for your professional services. By fulfilling ASA's educational, professional and experience requirements, you can become designated as an Accredited Member (AM) or Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in the society. Once accredited, you must maintain steady participation in a continuing education program to meet the society's mandatory reaccreditation requirements and to meet any applicable federal and state mandates for licensure and certification. To be as flexible as possible in meeting your education needs, ASA offers some courses in distance learning learning formats as well as in the traditional classroom format. More are being developed. Principles of Valuation CoursesThese courses provide instruction and examination at successive, increasing levels in each appraisal discipline: Appraisal Review and Management, Business Valuation, Gems and Jewelry, Machinery and Technical Specialties, Personal Property and Real Property. The introductory-level courses (numbered 201) in each of the disciplines provide the basics in general valuation theory and terminology, discipline-specific theory and terminology and aspects of appraising as a profession. The higher-level courses (numbered 202-204, with Real Property also having a 205) cover research and analysis methodologies, case studies, government regulations, report writing and professional standards. Each of these courses has a final 3-4 hour objective question exam, with a minimal passing score of 75 percent. Continuing education hours may be awarded for each course completed:
Advanced Courses and SeminarsThese programs will help you work successfully in some of the most active areas of valuation today. They are filled with practical and fundamental techniques to help you expand client services and increase revenues.
Continuing Education Seminars and WorkshopsIndividual disciplines present seminars and workshops on topics of interest. The annual Advanced Business Valuation Conference convenes appraisers and business leaders to examine highly specialized valuation issues. Supplementing these offerings are local and regional seminars and workshops sponsored by society chapters for their members and professional colleagues. Continuing education seminars are approved for reaccreditation credit.
